We just passed the one year anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan.  Do some research and post a comment responding to this question:  How have the Japanese people rebounded from the earthquake and tsunami? Post a comment by Friday (10 pts.)

Your response can focus on any number of topics, including:

  • survivor stories
  • how the government has improved warning systems
  • new building codes to improve the strength of buildings
  • improved technology to detect earthquakes

In chapel on Monday morning, Juniors Reece Foy and Lauren Uhr told us that next week Tuesday will be a “Take action” day in our geography and history classes in the fight to end genocide in Sudan.  In order to learn more about this effort, go to standnow.org and browse the website.  Post a comment by Friday about something that you learned about the genocide OR efforts to help end the genocide.

Yippppeeeee- we have one extra day of school this year.  What would you do with your own free day (no parent or teacher involvement; money is not an object- just remember to be appropriate)?  In other words, what is your perfect day?  Post a comment by Friday.

For mine, I am going to have to go with a simple day at the beach with family and friends, possibly teaching the kids how to surf and ending the day with a Gotta Guava from Jamba Juice and a plate lunch from Rainbows.  Winnahs!

Research a natural disaster (hurricane, tropical storm, tsunami, earthquake, etc.) that has impacted the Latin American region in the last 2 years.  Share what you find by Friday in a paragraph, and include the website where you got your information.

Your assignment this week is to watch the famous Martin Luther King, Jr. “I have a dream ” speech.  You should be able to find it easily on the Internet.   On Friday , Jan. 27, you will share one part of the speech with the class.  In other words, you will stand in front of the class and repeat the words that Martin Luther King, Jr. said, and then you will explain the importance of the words.  You must share at least 20 words, which is about 1-2 sentences.  The only part that you may NOT share is the following line:

“I have a dream that my four little children will one live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Be ready on Friday- we will do this during class.

Choose one state in the United States to research (not Hawaii).  Tell me who the Governor of that state is, and share one major problem that the state is facing.  Here is an example using Hawaii:

“I researched Hawaii.  The governor of Hawaii is Neil Abercrombie.  One major issue in the state right now that is dominating the news is the point fixing scandal surrounding the University of Hawaii football team.  An anonoymous letter to the University President suggested that players were altering the outcomes of football games in order to beat the spread.  This is a big issue because it involves gambling and it is illegal.”

Start early on this one- you may not do a state that has already been done, so you have to read other posts first.  Posts due Friday.
