What new insights might this tell us about the Mayans, and what are your thoughts about those insights?   Post a comment by Friday (10 pts)

In chapel on Monday morning, Juniors Reece Foy and Lauren Uhr told us that next week Tuesday will be a “Take action” day in our geography and history classes in the fight to end genocide in Sudan.  In order to learn more about this effort, go to standnow.org and browse the website.  Post a comment by Friday about something that you learned about the genocide OR efforts to help end the genocide.

Yippppeeeee- we have one extra day of school this year.  What would you do with your own free day (no parent or teacher involvement; money is not an object- just remember to be appropriate)?  In other words, what is your perfect day?  Post a comment by Friday.

For mine, I am going to have to go with a simple day at the beach with family and friends, possibly teaching the kids how to surf and ending the day with a Gotta Guava from Jamba Juice and a plate lunch from Rainbows.  Winnahs!

Share a short piece of Chinese history or culture with the class.  You could research a person (like Mao Zedong or SunYat-Sen), a cultural practice (like foot binding or lion dancing), a popular food, language, or anything else.  This is just a way to inroduce the unit of China.  Write a paragraph and post by Friday.

Your assignment this week is to watch the famous Martin Luther King, Jr. “I have a dream ” speech.  You should be able to find it easily on the Internet.   On Friday , Jan. 27, you will share one part of the speech with the class.  In other words, you will stand in front of the class and repeat the words that Martin Luther King, Jr. said, and then you will explain the importance of the words.  You must share at least 20 words, which is about 1-2 sentences.  The only part that you may NOT share is the following line:

“I have a dream that my four little children will one live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Be ready on Friday- we will do this during class.

Some of you may have seen posters up on campus about a TED cafe, and some of you may even be familiar with the website that inpires this-  ted.com.  It is an opportunity for leaders in different fields- from music to poetry to math to art- to share their work in a 20 minute talk.  I think you will be surprised at how CRAZY good some of these are.  Go to ted.com and browse a little.  Find an interesting talk and watch it for at least 10 minutes (although I am sure many will wind up watching the entire 20 minutes).  Tell me who you listened to, what you learned, and what you thought about it.  Post by Friday.

In preparation for our guest speaker next week on the topic of genocide, research an example of genocide in the 20th century.  Share your research by Friday.

Five years ago, an Israeli soldier named Gilad Shalit was captured by Israel’s enemy across the border, the Palestinians.  Last week, Israel and the Palestinians brokered a deal that returned Shalit to Israel in exchange for the release of 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in Israel, many of whom committed violent acts against Israel, including terrorism.  What do you make of this development?  Do some digging . . . comment due Friday.

What was your BEST moment of the first quarter?  Maybe it happened in class, on an athletic field, in the band room, or just hanging out with friends.  Share your experience by Thursday.

What is your favorite book and why? I am just interested . . . . Post by Friday.

One of my favorites is I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou.  It just sort of turned me on to reading (after high school).
